As many of you know, I’m a tech geek. I love tech. I especially love Apple tech. So, I thought I’d have to do a review of the iPad.
I know, I know, I said that I wouldn’t get one until we paid off all our non-mortgage debt and built our fully-funded emergency fund. Don’t worry! I’m sticking to that!
All of the critics are praising the iPad as something that really does fit perfectly between the iPhone and the Macbook. This tablet computer is really sleek looking, no doubt. It’ll run nearly all iPhone apps, and has a nice array of new iPad-focused applications waiting to be played with.
Instead of going over the hardware specs which I’m sure would be ultimately nerdy of me, I’d like to talk about the implications of such a technology. The ability to hold the internet in your hands is nothing new, but the degree to which the iPad implements the internet into our lives is profound.
We’re living in a world that is constantly connected. We have to be careful that we don’t lose ourselves in this technological world. The ability to buy music, movies, apps, and more from the iPad with the touch of a finger truly negates the feeling that you are paying for something. Handing over cash is much more difficult to do!
Don’t get me wrong, I think that this technology can be beneficial in people’s lives. But Christians know that anything with instant access to anything can be a potential downfall. A computer is a powerful thing that should only be used for the glory of the Lord.
I have a hunch that the iPad will be a big hit. Holding the internet and having access to thousands of books at any given time is an amazing thing. For this reason, to read, I’ll probably get the iPad when we’ve met our financial goals and the second generation comes along.
Are you going to get an iPad? What are your thoughts?

Until the iPad offers multitasking abilities I will not buy one of them. It for sure is a great device that fits really well in between the too-small-for-real-productivity-apps iPhone and the too-large-to-quickly-type-some-ideas-into-a-mindmap laptop. But without the ability to really get some work done (I mean fast copy and paste between apps and instant access to the browser from any other part) and not just use it for entertainment, it is too expensive for me.
Im sure there will be great improvements in the next generation.. hopefully more features for the business use like copying the iPad screen to a Beamer for presentations.
And by that time there will be some ten thousand apps available, prices will be cheaper and more and more uses been discovered and the iPad modified for them.
Frank, great thoughts. I couldn’t agree more. I’m torn, however, on whether multitasking is a good thing on this type of device. My concerns are battery life and performance. I suppose new hardware might lend a hand in the multitasking world.
looks cool but I wont be getting one.
