Frugal Tip: Skip the Ads!

by John on May 3, 2010

It’s been over a year since we’ve been exposed to regular television advertising. We decided when we got married that television wasn’t really something we should budget for, and skipped it altogether. Of course, we have a nice computer that we can occasionally watch shows on, but the advertising seems to be very minimal.

We’re not out of touch with the world. We still get the news and information we need on a daily basis. A lot of people don’t realize that. -Courtney Frainee

At first, it was a financial move. We didn’t want to pay for cable. But after we quit standard television altogether, we started realizing all the other benefits.

I can’t tell you how many times people have talked about the “latest and greatest” thing, and I had no clue what they were referring to. The advertising hadn’t reached me. Instead, I would research the things that I was truly interested in, and not be tempted to buy even more than I intended.

Don’t get me wrong. We’re still exposed to advertising. But the lack of television has cut the advertising by half if not more. Not being advertised to helps us stay frugal. And that, is our frugal tip of the day. Skip the ads!
