A friend and reader of The Christian Dollar recently wrote in with the following idea:
Here’s an idea for your blog: How to stay motivated on keeping a budget.
I understand how difficult it is to keep a budget. Sometimes unexpected things come up. Other times, you get plain burnt out. How do you stay motivated to keep a budget?
I’ve brainstormed this question for quite some time. I have come to the conclusion that there are three important factors on how to stick with a budget. Here they are in no particular order:
- Have future goals. You must envision a better life. Mediocre living is not an option. What do you want to accomplish? Maybe your vision is to create a great financial foundation for future generations. I have found in my own life that having future goals encourages me to stick with the budget. Every time we stick to our plan, we are investing in our future – and I like that.
- Solid accountability. I’m married, so I naturally have the accountability to stick with the plan. But what if you’re single? If you’re working the budget alone, find a good friend to hold you accountable. You need someone who is dedicated to your mission. Without that support, you’ll probably backslide and fail.
- Envelope budgeting system. If you’re going to stick with a budget, you need a solid budgeting system. You know what a fan I am of the envelope budgeting system. To supplement my literal envelopes, I have a virtual envelope system. Currently, I’m using MoneyWell. It helps us stay accountable to our plan. Reviewing your budget on a regular basis will also help you keep your sight on the goal.
I know there are many more elements to sticking with your budget. What are some of your tricks?
