How To Stick With That Budget!

A friend and reader of The Christian Dollar recently wrote in with the following idea:

Here’s an idea for your blog: How to stay motivated on keeping a budget.

I understand how difficult it is to keep a budget. Sometimes unexpected things come up. Other times, you get plain burnt out. How do you stay motivated to keep a budget?

I’ve brainstormed this question for quite some time. I have come to the conclusion that there are three important factors on how to stick with a budget. Here they are in no particular order:

  1. Have future goals. You must envision a better life. Mediocre living is not an option. What do you want to accomplish? Maybe your vision is to create a great financial foundation for future generations. I have found in my own life that having future goals encourages me to stick with the budget. Every time we stick to our plan, we are investing in our future – and I like that.
  2. Solid accountability. I’m married, so I naturally have the accountability to stick with the plan. But what if you’re single? If you’re working the budget alone, find a good friend to hold you accountable. You need someone who is dedicated to your mission. Without that support, you’ll probably backslide and fail.
  3. Envelope budgeting system. If you’re going to stick with a budget, you need a solid budgeting system. You know what a fan I am of the envelope budgeting system. To supplement my literal envelopes, I have a virtual envelope system. Currently, I’m using MoneyWell. It helps us stay accountable to our plan. Reviewing your budget on a regular basis will also help you keep your sight on the goal.

I know there are many more elements to sticking with your budget. What are some of your tricks?
