As you know, I’m a huge fan of Dave Ramsey. He rocks. Seriously. So I had to go visit him up in Portland, OR to catch up on the latest Dave sayings, advice, and more.
Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover Live Event Review: The Best Takeaways
We saw Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover Live, and it was awesome. Sure, it was a lot of the same stuff I heard before, but there were some interesting takeaways that I’d love to share with all you readers of The Christian Dollar.
1. Live on less than you make.
Dave comes out, thanks us for being there, and says he’ll go ahead and sum up personal finance for us: “Live on less than you make!” Then he pretends to walk off stage, as if there’s nothing more to say.
It was very funny, but made a great point: people must work on their income and expenses if they want to get ahead in personal finance.
2. Personal finance is 80% behavior and 20% head knowledge.
He really drove this home. Dave explained how all the information he was teaching us was good information, but would do nothing if we just sat around and thought about it. We must DO what we KNOW. It’s all about changing our behavior.
This compelled me to work harder in life and strive for a higher standard.
3. Get focused like a gazelle!
Dave uses a great example of how to win at life – not just get out of debt. When the gazelle tries to escape the cheetah, he has to have determination and weave in and out to outwit the cheetah’s speed.
You have to get intense to win at life. There’s no exception. You have to be better and do better than those who are looking to sap all your energy and take your money – trust me, they’re out there!
Last Thoughts . . .
If you have Dave coming to your area, you must go see him! His enthusiasm will help others you might bring convert to a better way to handle their finances.
What do you think? Have you seen Dave? What were your impressions?

Thank you so much for the review. I am taking my 3 adult children to Long Beach event this Saturday. One of my children is being extremely inconvenienced to go, so I was nervous about, almost forcing, her to go. SO thank you for the great review. Now I CAN’T WAIT!!!!
Judy, I’m glad you liked the review! Yeah, Dave’s live events are truly awesome. Good for you for taking your children! Even if just one of them comes away with one of the principles, it’ll be so worth the price of admission.
The event is scheduled for 5 hours. How long is Dave Ramsey actually on stage? Can you tell me how the event is organized? We won’t get there at the start time, and I wonder if it is even worth going if we miss the first hour or two…
Thanks for your help!
Hey Monica. There are a few breaks throughout the presentation. There is a pre show that (when we went) featured Jon Acuff. I highly recommend that you try to make it by the start time, especially if you’re not familiar with the 7 Baby Steps.
You can catch yourself up on the 7 Baby Steps here: http://www.thechristiandollar.com/dave-ramseys-7-baby-steps-getting-started/
It’s worth going even if you’re going to miss part of it, just make sure you fill in the gaps with information elsewhere. Thanks for being a reader!
So is it a “sit and get” type event….5 hours of Dave Ramsey telling us how to use his plan to get our finances in check. Does he provide something besides what is in his books, etc?
I am attending his live event in San Antonio and the registration said the program is from 1-6pm. Does that include the preshow or do we need to get there even earlier to catch the preshow. Aslo, we are wanting to purchase the FPU at home kit. Will they have those ON SALE at the event or full price? Thanks!
Cheryl, I’m not sure if you’d catch the pre show at 1. I remember we arrived on time and they had the “pre show” starting at the time the event started, so I’d imagine it would be the same. I remember seeing FPU kits available at the event, and most of the stuff was on sale!
