The Importance of Diligence in Building Wealth (Proverbs 10:4)

by John Frainee on October 28, 2012

If you’re like most, you’re trying to increase your income. How do you become wealthy?

In Proverbs we read:

Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth. – Proverbs 10:4 NIV

What is diligence? One dictionary describes it this way:

Having or showing care and conscientiousness in one’s work or duties.

Today I ask you: Are you being diligent in your work? Are you showing care in your duties? Are you wishing to do the right thing in all that you do? Or, are you trying to find shortcuts wherever possible?

Making a quick buck is hardly possible. Even if you were successful in doing so, would you feel good about it? When you look back on your life, wouldn’t you want to see your days filled with thoughtful labor and honorable workmanship?

Another thing Proverbs 10:4 is reminding me about is personal responsibility. Notice how this verse is talking about us individually. If we are lazy and depend on others for our needs, we’re going to be met with poverty. If we are diligent and work with our own hands, however, we’re going to see wealth.

I don’t want to depend on the government or anyone else for my needs. I want to use the skills and abilities that the Lord has given me to provide for my family and put food on the table.

The Bible is making it clear that taking responsibility for our actions and working as if we’re working for the Lord will help us achieve wealth so that we can bless others. I don’t know about you, but that’s where I want to be.
