You Work for Yourself! Really!

by John on January 6, 2010

Whether you own a business or are an employee at Walmart, you work for yourself. How so you might ask? Well, ultimately you sell yourself. If you have a boss, they are looking to you to be the best you can be for their company. Every day you work, you are selling yourself to others.

Personality, hard work, human relations, and skill all come into play. If you make a point to think of yourself as self-employed, you will be a better employee and a hard worker.

Looking for work?

This mindset is especially important when you are looking for a job. Finding a job is a full-time endeavor, no doubt.

I remember when I recently hit the streets looking for a job, I had to change the way I thought about work. No more working for someone else, I was working for myself! I was selling me. This realization, that I was the one I needed to work for, propelled me forward to find a job.

Even after obtaining a place of employment, I keep in mind that I work for myself, not others. The truth is, I’m working for God. God put each us here to accomplish a mission, and that is truly the goal worth pursuing.

Want to own your own business?

I understand. I’m right there with you. What drives me forward in my job is that I really do work and sell myself, and maybe one day, I’ll be able to start something that will help and benefit people. Be patient, if working for yourself is your dream, you will one day achieve it.

Don’t limit yourself.

If you currently have a job, don’t limit yourself to one. Explore other avenues! You never know if you’ll find your true passion. I know that if I didn’t write, I would lose my mind. I’m one of those that need to create, learn, explore, and play. If you’re like me, you need to do more than work + sleep. You need to play and explore! Blogging gives me the freedom to communicate with others, share my thoughts, and write about one of my favorite topics: biblical finance.

Hold on and let go.

Look forward to the future and what it has in store for you. Holding on to God, you need to let go of the world as you know it. You work for the Lord, and in a sense, you work for yourself–not your employer. Don’t think of yourself as a meaningless pawn in the larger scheme of life. You are valuable and the Lord wants you to discover that. So, in conclusion, work as if you are selling yourself and ultimately work for God. Ready, set, GO!

“Holding on to God, you need to let go of the world as you know it.” WOW, this is really one of the biggest challenges for the believer, to de-emphasize all that is seen and known in favor of that which is promised. This might be the definition of faith itself.

Anyway, I totally agree that we’re working for ourselves no matter what we do. That detachment can help to keep us from getting so caught up in the details of a job that we end up hating the job or struggling to get through every day.

Great thoughts Kevin. You’re absolutely correct. Faith is crucial to be successful, and it certainly is a challenge for the Christian. Faith turns our perspective away from the pains of this world and to the glories of the next.

I’m so glad you wrote in. You have an excellent website by the way! Keep up the good work!
