Have You Failed Enough to Win?
Afraid of failure? Yeah, me too. But that doesn’t mean failure is necessarily a bad thing. Many failures have a lesson to teach, and if we can change our perspective on failure, we might just be a little less afraid of it. Here’s why you should welcome a certain amount of uncertainty and dare to fail.
Why We Are Afraid of Failure
Failure is scary because we sometimes think that:
- If we fail we’re doomed, and will never be able to recover in the marketplace.
- If we fail people will mock us, and our reputation will be ripped apart.
- If we fail, we’ll be “losers,” and become those people we don’t want to be.
The Two Types of People Who Lose
Failure doesn’t necessarily mean you lose the game. The people who lose are those who don’t fail at all (not trying something new, or taking any risks), or are those who fail so hard, they don’t get to play again.
The goal, then, is for us to aim somewhere in the middle.
You don’t want to become the guy or gal who avoids all failure, only to lose in the end. And, you don’t want to become the guy or gal who pushes all their chips forward, betting everything like James Bond.
Fail Again, and Again
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to fail repeatedly. In other words, try something new! If you don’t like where you’re at in your job, your finances, your life, or whatever else, take a calculated risk.
You know what they say about those who try the same thing over and over again. Don’t be insane, try something, and if you fail, move on to the next potential failing.
Fail enough times, and eventually you’ll find something that works.
Many years ago, I was intrigued by the idea that you could make money online. I tried one tactic, and it failed. I tried another, and it too failed. I probably went through a dozen methods, and they all failed – until I found what worked. And when I found it, I found that I loved what I found – not because it made me money, but because it allowed me to help and connect with people.
Seeing Failure Differently Yet?
If you’re not, that’s okay. Fly high, try lots of different things to get you where you want to be, and eventually you’ll arrive.
